Zliten

Zliten is a town on the southern Mediterranean coast with a population of about 200000.

It is a Libyan town placed at 150 km to the east of the capital, Tripoli.

Zliten is about 30 km to to east of the old Roman city; Lepcis Magna or Leptis Magna, and it is about 60 km to the west of the city of Misrata.

Its name in Arabic is very controversial. Some say it is an old Amazighi (Berberic) name, while others say it is an old Arabic name originally composed of two words which later on were made as one word.

It is a small town that spreads on an area of about 8 km. sq.

There is an Islamic university. Its official name is 'Al-Jamiaa Al-Asmariya' i.e. Al-Asmariya Islamic University.

There are many faculties, as the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Economics and Political Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Dentistry and Mouth Surgery, and the Faculty of Teachers. They are all under the supervision of Al-Merqib University.

There is also a higher vocational training centre in many engineering fields.

In Zliten there are many banks. It is a good shopping centre. Zliten '****' Hotel is a good place for tourists.

Zliten, as a region, spreads on an area of about 3000 km. sq. In Zliten there are many ancient Roman sites such as: 'Darbuk Omira' i.e. the Villa of Omira, and the Castle in Al-Jumaa, and many other sites.
