This is a Malay name; the name "Ishak" is a patronymic, not a family name, and the person should be referred to by his or her given name, "Yusof". The Malay word bin (b.) or binte (bte.), if used, means "son of" or "daughter of" respectively.

Yusof bin Ishak (pronounced [ˈjʊsɒf bɪn ˈɪʃɑːk], yoo'-sof bɪn ɪ'-shaak) (12 August 191023 November 1970) was an eminent Singaporean politician. Born in the state of Perak in the Federated Malay States, he first served as Yang di-Pertuan Negara (head of state) between 1959 and 1965, remaining in office during the time that Singapore was part of the Federation of Malaysia between 1963 and 1965. Following Singapore's departure from Malaysia in 1965, he served as President of the Republic until his death in 1970. Yusof is buried in the Kranji State Cemetery.

He received his primary education at Victoria Bridge School (now known as Victoria School), and secondary education at Raffles Institution.

Yusof was well known both as a journalist and the founder of the Malay newspaper Utusan Melayu prior to becoming head of state of Singapore. He was married to Noor Aishah.

His portrait appears on the Singapore Portrait Series currency notes introduced in 1999. Yusof is of Minangkabau descent from his father's side while his mother is a native of Langkat regency in Indonesia.[1] His brother is Aziz Ishak who was a Malayan journalist and freedom fighter.
