Xsan is Apple Inc.'s high-performance SAN file system for Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server.

Xsan enables you to share one or more Xserve RAID devices with multiple Xserve or Macintosh systems. With the Xsan file system installed, these computers can read and write to the same storage volume at the same time. Xsan includes all the software required for a complete SAN solution including the metadata controller software, the file system client software and integrated setup, management and monitoring tools.

In Apple's own words on the Xsan homepage: "You may also use Xsan in a cross-platform environment alongside Windows-, UNIX- and Linux-based systems, using the Quantum StorNext File System, which is 100% interoperable with Xsan."

In May 2006, Apple released Xsan 1.2 with support for volume sizes nearly 2 petabyte in size.

On August 7, 2006, Apple announced Xsan 1.4. Xsan 1.4 is available for Intel-based Macintosh computers as a Universal binary and supports file system access control lists.

On December 5, 2006 Apple released Xsan 1.4.1.
