It is completely surrounded by mountains. In its south and southwest lies the Osterhorngruppe, a mountain range, about 1,800 metres high. Directly south of St. Gilgen rises the Zwölferhorn (1,521 m), which can be visited by cable car. On the north side of the lake, the Schafberg is located. A rack railway, the Schafbergbahn leads up to the summit at 1,782 m.
