Winslow, Arkansas

Winslow is a city in Washington County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 399 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²), all land.
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 399 people, 148 households, and 108 families residing in the city. The population density was 80.7/km² (209.3/mi²). There were 170 housing units at an average density of 34.4/km² (89.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.48% White, 1.00% Black or African American, 2.01% Native American, 0.75% from other races, and 4.76% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 148 households out of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% were married couples living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.18.
In the city the population was spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 105.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $24,306, and the median income for a family was $28,125. Males had a median income of $28,625 versus $17,125 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,109. About 17.5% of families and 24.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 37.3% of those under age 18 and 15.4% of those age 65 or over.
For many years, the town had its own school system. It served the city and nearby rural areas in the southern portion of Washington, County, AR. By most counts, enrollment for grades K-12 was usually in the mid-200s.
The district became part of the Greenland, AR school district in 2004 after the Arkansas Legislature passed a state law that mandated districts with less than 350 students consolidate. The high school, which actually served grades 7-12, closed at the end of the 2004-2005 school year. The graduating class at the 2005 spring ceremony had 14 seniors. Winslow Elementary for grades K-6 was retained for a time following the high school closure. However, in Nov. 2006, the Greenland School Board voted to close that school at the end of the 2006-2007 school year after two years with an enrollment of about 90 students.The Winslow School was known for having a unique mascot: Squirrels.
