Wilson is a common English surname, literally "son of Wil" (William an old Germanic name). It had some popularity as a first name in England as well beginning in the 1000s and 1100s, after William the Conqueror took the throne. As a first name Wilsons are found primarily in Great Britain, and the United States, but it is quite common as a surname in many English speaking countries such as Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada). It is the eighth most popular surname in both England and the United States.
