What's Up, Doc?
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
What's up, Doc? is the famous catchphrase of the cartoon character Bugs Bunny. It was first used in A Wild Hare in 1940, and the phrase (or a variation) has been worked into nearly every Bugs Bunny cartoon since then.
"Doc" is way Bugs typically addresses his protagonist for a particular film, seldom calling the character by his real name. It was first spoken to Elmer in A Wild Hare. In Hare Remover, Bugs addresses him as "Doc" as if that were his name. However, Bugs has also called Yosemite Sam "Doc" (usually to Sam's annoyance), as well as other characters. One of the few times he used the phrase to refer to an actual doctor was for the benefit of a gag in Hair-Raising Hare.
The comma is sometimes omitted, in keeping with Warner Bros. practice of omitting commas from titles, such as What's Cookin' Doc? and the slogan appearing at the end of most of the WB cartoons, "That's all Folks."
The phrase may also refer to:
- What's Up Doc? (cartoon), a 1950 Warner Bros. cartoon featuring the said rabbit.
- "What's Up, Doc?", a frequently-used instrumental theme in Bugs Bunny cartoons that was given words for the 1950 cartoon.
- What's Up, Doc? (film), a 1972 comedy film starring Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal.
- What's Up Doc? (TV series), a Saturday Morning CITV variety series aired from 1992 to 1995.
- "What's Up Doc? (Can We Rock)", a 1993 song by Fu-Schnickens
