Western Lombard is a Lombard language variety spoken in Italy and Switzerland (Canton Ticino). Varieties spoken in Canton Ticino and Italian neighbouring areas are usually referred of as Insubric, from the name of the region involved.
In Italian-speaking contexts, Western Lombard is often generically called a "dialect". This is often incorrectly understood as to mean a dialect of Italian, which actually is not the case. Western Lombard and Italian are different languages and are not mutually intelligible. The Western Lombard, more than many other languages spoken in Italy, have many varieties, because of the mountain geography and the politic history of divisions.
Like all other dialects of Lombard, Western Lombard belongs to the Romance language related to French, Romansh, Italian, etc.

Various dictionaries, a few grammars, extensive literature and a recent translation of the Gospels are available.
