WHAT is a commercial radio station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, broadcasting on 1340 AM.
WHAT airs a modern rock music format branded as "Skin Radio". It is seen as a replacement to Y-100, which was a previous modern rock station in Philadelphia, though it was on FM. Skin Radio also plays poetry readings.
Though many feel that modern rock is a format in demand, WHAT has a very weak signal and covers a very small geographical area. Also, dut to it's position on an AM frequency, sound quality is also not comparable to that of FM stations. WHAT is broadcast in HD Radio, allowing listners with HD Radio recievers to hear the station's broadcasts in FM quality. Though this allows sound quality to rival that of analog FM radio, very few people actually have an HD reciever, and by broadcasting in HD Radio, the sound quality of the station's analog broadcast further deteriorates.
Prior to Skin Radio, WHAT aired an "urban talk" format marketed toward African Americans. After over 80 years, (since 1925), WHAT flipped to its current format on January 19, 2007.
