Vaseline is a genericized trademark reference to petroleum jelly.
It is also a brand of skin creams, lotions, cleansers and lubricant produced by Unilever.
The first known reference to the name Vaseline was by the inventor of petroleum jelly, Robert Chesebrough in his U.S. patent: “I, Robert Chesebrough, have invented a new and useful product from petroleum which I have named “Vaseline…”. He inflicted self harming wounds on himself to demonstrate that it heals wounds and reduces scars.
