University of the Philippines Official Seal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The University of the Philippines Official Seal has long been debated. Several versions of the logo are in use within the University system.
To prevent the multiplicity of logos, the Philippine Intellectual Property Office has approved in the year 2004 the official logo of the University, just in time for the Centennial Celebration in 2008.
The logo has two versions: black and white, and colored. Nonetheless, both depict the same images connected to the University's long history.
The parrot is the bird depicted in the logo. Its wings widespread symbolize the vision of the University to be a center of academic freedom. It also represents the UP students who are trained to offer their lives in the service of the Filipino people. It is often mistaken for an eagle, but in all the freshmen orientation sessions in the campus, this is quickly corrected by senior students and university officials.
The parrot in the official seal holds a shield that carries different symbols for agriculture, engineering, and science, the three fields where the University has been known for. Until today, UP takes pride in these three areas of knowledge as it remains one of the Centers of Excellence in the Philippines, as approved by the Commission on Higher Education.
The colors in the colored version of the seal are green and maroon, the official colors of the University.
