University of Guelph Arboretum

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The University of Guelph Arboretum is an arboretum in southern Ontario. It is situated in Guelph, Ontario, near the main University of Guelph campus between Stone Road and College Avenue and covers 165 hectares. Established in 1970, the arboretum's terrain ranges from rough meadow to swamp; hardwood bush to rocky drumlins; farm field to orchard. The arboretum grows almost all of the tree and shrub species native to southern Ontario and many introduced species. It is open to the public during daylight hours free of charge, and has 8.2 km of waymarked trails.

The OAC Centennial Arboretum Centre occupies a central location on the grounds and can accommodate groups of up to 200 easily. A reflecting pond at the main entrance provides a link between the angular lines of the building and the gentle curves of the arboretum terrain. Within walking distance of the Centre are collections of flowering trees, shrubs, lilacs and evergreens and is easily accessible and well frequented by horticulture and botany students from around the province. The arboretum produces many scientific papers for journals and maintains an herbarium and active seed exchange program.
