USS Newport News
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Three ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Newport News, for the city that was once part of the politically extinct subdivision of Warwick County, Virginia (Newport News is considered an independent city, and is not part of a larger county), which is one of the world’s great ship building centers, and the only one in the United States which builds nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
The first Newport News (AK-3) was a German cargo ship named Odenwald, taken over by the U.S. Navy during World War I and renamed.
The second Newport News (CA-148), a Des Moines-class heavy cruiser, served during the early years of the Cold War.
The third Newport News (SSN-750), a Los Angeles-class submarine, is in service as of 2007.
