Three ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Narwhal for the narwhal, a gray and white arctic whale which averages 20 feet (6 m) in length, the male of which has a long, twisted ivory tusk of commercial value.
The first Narwhal (SS-17) was commissioned in 1909 and renamed D–1 in 1911.
The second Narwhal (SC-1), the lead ship of her class of submarine and one of the "V-boats", served during World War II.
The third Narwhal (SSN-671), a unique submarine, served during the Cold War.
