USS Cyane
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two United States Navy ships have been named Cyane, a Latin word for the blue-green color cyan.
- The first Cyane was originally the 28-gun British frigate HMS Cyane, captured by the Constitution in 1815 and taken into the US Navy, where she served until 1835.
- The second Cyane was a 22-gun sloop-of-war, launched in 1837, commissioned 1838 and a key player in the Mexican-American War. In 1854, the USS Cyane participated in the bombardment of Greytown on the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua after failing to receive compensation for violence which had been directed against Solon Borland, an American diplomat, as well as other US citizens. The ship was finally decommissioned in 1871 and sold 1887.
