The constituency covers the western part of the London Borough of Richmond, i.e., that part of the borough on the north bank of the River Thames (although the river is on a north-south axis at this point). It includes the town of Twickenham, as well as the Hampton, Teddington and Whitton areas. It also includes Hampton Court Palace and Bushy Park, and the Rugby Football Union's ground, Twickenham Stadium.

The Commission received only eleven representations following the publication of their original proposals, of which ten were in support.

The electoral wards forming the constituency are:

Twickenham was a safe seat for the Conservative Party for many years, but the Liberal Democrats gained the seat at the 1997 general election. Its current MP, Liberal Democrat Vincent Cable, has increased his majority in the two general elections since, and the seat is one of very few in Britain that gave the Liberal Democrats a majority of votes in the 2005 election.
