Several movies feature transgender as a central plot element, including:
- Glen or Glenda? (1953) is a semi-autobiographical movie starring its director Ed Wood, who was a transvestite. The subject of the film was originally intended to be Christine Jorgensen, who became famous in 1952 after undergoing male-to-female sex reassignment surgery, but instead the film became a more personal plea from Wood for tolerance towards cross-dressing.
- Myra Breckinridge (1970) starring Raquel Welch in an off-beat role.
- The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) starring Tim Curry as a "sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania".
- Let Me Die a Woman (1978) is a documentary film featuring interviews with sex reassignment surgeon Dr. Leo Wollman and various transsexuals.
- Dressed To Kill (1980) a film about a transsexual murderer
- Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) Luis Molina and Valentin Arregui are cell mates in a South American prison. Luis is found guilty of immoral behaviour and Valentin is a political prisoner. To escape reality Luis invents romantic movies, while Valentin tries to keep his mind on the situation he's in. During the time they spend together, the two come to understand and respect one another.

- The Crying Game (1992) is a drama film based on a 1968 novel by John Braine. The plot revolves around a transgendered woman named Dil (played by the Oscar-nominated Jaye Davidson).
- Just Like a Woman (1992) is a British film starring Julie Walters, and is based on the autobiographical book Gerald/ine by Monica Jay.
- The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) a cult Australian film starring Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp as drag queens.
- Ed Wood (1994) is a film about the cult movie maker himself. Directed by Tim Burton, the film stars Johnny Depp as Ed Wood.
- Different for Girls (1996) is a British comedy film with a major character, Kim, who is a transsexual woman.
- Ma Vie en Rose (1997) is a Belgian film about a young boy, Ludovic, who believes that he was born in the wrong body and should have been a girl.
- Boys Don't Cry (1999) is a drama film based on the real-life story of Brandon Teena. The movie received lots of media attention when its star, Hilary Swank, who played Brandon, won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
- Dude, Where's My Car? (2000) is a comedy sci-fi film about two stoners trying to remember where they parked their car. They meet a transgender stripper who wants $2,000 from them.
- Southern Comfort (2001) is a documentary film about the final year in the life of Robert Eads, a female-to-male transsexual.
- Yellow Hair 2 (2001) is a South Korean film starring the transsexual actress Harisu.
- Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) is an off-Broadway cult musical adapted for cinema about a transsexual German glam rocker recounting the story of her betrayal by her former boyfriend.
- The Badge (2002) is a film starring Billy Bob Thornton as a sheriff investigating the death of a local transsexual.

- Soldier's Girl (2003) is a drama film based on real-life story of the relationship between Private Barry Winchell and singer (now actress) Calpernia Addams.
- Normal (2003) is a drama film about a midwestern factory worker who stuns his wife of 25 years revealing that he wishes to have sex reassignment surgery. It starred Oscar-nominated actor Tom Wilkinson.
- Beautiful Boxer (2003) is an autobiographical movie about a Thai transsexual kick-boxing champion, Parinya Charoenphol who is better known by her nick name, Nong Tum. Nong Tum participated in a very male sport to fund the sex change she longed for. Asanee Suwan starred as Nong Tum.
- Transamerica (2005) is a comedy-drama staring Felicity Huffman who plays the central character of the film, Bree, a pre-operative male-to-female transsexual. It was nominated for two Academy Awards in 2006: Felicity Huffman for Best Actress, and Dolly Parton for Best Original Song.
- Funny Kinda Guy (2005) is a documentary following the singer Simon de Voil's transition to manhood, encountering the sacrifice of his female singing voice and his discovery of true love. Directed by Travis Reeves, a man who has also transitioned.
- The World's Fastest Indian (2005) featured Burt Munro who broke the world's land speed record for a 1000 cc motorcycle in 1967. In the film, Munro met a pre-operative male-to-female transsexual motel clerk, Tina Washington (played by Chris Williams, Vanessa L. Williams' brother) when he arrived in Los Angeles on his way to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah for Speed Week.
- 100% Human (2005) a documentary about a transsexual woman named Monica, and the personal events leading up to and after her SRS as she confessed to her video diary.
- 100% Woman (2005) a documentary on Canadian downhill mountain bike racer, Michelle Dumaresq.
- En Soap (English: A Soap, 2006) is a Danish film about the love between a (pre-operative) male-to-female transsexual and a lesbian woman.
Well known movies in which a transgendered/transsexual character plays a minor but important role:
- Cabaret (1973 in film) featured a transgendered, although probably not transsexual, club girl.
- In Dog Day Afternoon (1975 in film) Al Pacino's lover, played by [Chris Sarandon], was a pre-operative transsexual. Pacino's character was robbing a bank to pay for the operation.
- In the 1982 film The World According to Garp, the character Roberta Muldoon (played by John Lithgow in an Oscar-nominated role) is a transsexual former football player. The 1999 film
- Better Than Chocolate has a male to female transsexual character named Judy.
- TransGeneration is an eight episode documentary film depicting the lives of four transgender college students.
- Second Serve is a TV film based on the autobiography of tennis pro Renee Richards (played by Vanessa Redgrave), whose player status was challenged in 1976 when it was revealed that she was a transsexual.
- Hayley Cropper is a fictional transsexual character in the British soap opera Coronation Street.
- Ava Moore is a fictional transgendered woman in the American drama television series Nip/Tuck.
- Alexis Arquette is a transgendered individual currently appearing in the reality series The Surreal Life.
- Sister Paula is a transgendered Christian preacher who has appeared on public access television and has her own podcast.
- Zarf is a fictional transgender character in the American soap opera All My Children
- Carlotta played a showgirl revealed as transgendered in soap opera Number 96 in 1973.
- In an episode of Diagnosis: Murder, a transgendered woman is murdered by his previous lover who loved her as himself.
- Alexis Meade is a fictional transgendered woman in the American drama television series Ugly Betty.
- There's Something About Miriam was a reality television show filmed in 2003 and originally aired in the UK on Sky One in February 2004. It featured six men wooing 21-year-old Mexican model Miriam without revealing that she was a transwoman until the finale.
- Big Brother UK, featured Transsexual winner Nadia Almada in 2004, and Kemal Shahin in 2005.
