His first appearance was in The Corellian Trilogy, when he used xenophobia to gain power for his political party, the Human League. During the turmoil of the Corellian Crisis, he imprisoned Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and the Solo children. The children escaped and foiled his plot to establish himself as the dictator of a government resembling the Empire in its anti-alien bias and autocratic nature. The Bakuran fleet jumped into the Corellian system to stop Sal-Solo, who controlled the superweapon known as Centerpoint Station, and had threatened several star systems with it. The Triad, former rulers of Corellia regained control of the station, though, and the interdiction field was killed. A waiting New Republic armada jumped in and deposed Sal-Solo.

During the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, Sal-Solo tried to persuade Anakin Solo, who had bonded with it, to fire the station's repulsor weapon; Anakin refused. Sal-Solo then took the controls and fired the weapon, demolishing the better half of a Yuuzhan Vong armada but also most of the Hapan armada battling over Fondor in an instant. This earned the eternal enmity of the Hapans and forced the Yuuzhan Vong to retreat, though Sal-Solo was hailed a hero.

On the strength of his pyrrhic victory and his own cunning political skills, he was elected Diktat. When Leia was injured by the Warmaster Tsavong Lah, he forced the Jedi to flee Corellia, which almost cost Leia her life. The Jedi Master Eelysa was spared, though, when the Solos convinced Sal-Solo that she was Jaina, letting them take her with them.

During the events of Star Wars, New Jedi Order: Destiny's Way, Thrackan was given control of the Peace Brigade against his will while trying to make a deal with the Yuuzhan Vong, and was sent to set up the new government on Ylesia. Within a week, the Galactic Alliance invaded and ousted him a second time. He was captured along with the Republic's self-proclaimed Chief of State, Pwoe, who had been on an unsanctioned diplomatic mission to Ylesia. The Peace Brigade command structure collapsed after this; most members either became slaves to or under the direct command of the Yuuzhan Vong.

After his release from jail, he reentered Corellian politics, where his popularity had not waned. In the Legacy of the Force books, he has started a new separatist movement based around the idea that all planets have the right to their own self-defense forces. His plans to use Centerpoint to force concessions were set back when Ben Skywalker sabotaged the station. When he attempted to repair the station, the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances responded by completely blockading Corellia.

Thrackan also faced dissent from the Corellian political system. As there are three major political parties on Corellia, his position was never truly secure. He was assassinated in his own office by Boba Fett (who was hired by a rival politician), Han Solo (who wanted to elminate his troublesome nemesis once and for all), and a bounty hunter named Mirta Gev (who fired the killing shot). They had been hired by Dur Gejjen, a representative of the rival Democratic Alliance, which took over the Corellian government after the assassination by blaming the incident on the Galactic Alliance.
