PRI's The World is a news radio program co-produced by the BBC World Service of the United Kingdom, and Public Radio International and WGBH of the United States. The program's goal is to bring international journalism/news that illuminates the world specifically for US listeners. PRI conceived and developed the program based on its congruence with its mission and in order to fulfill the critical need for more original global news created for and provided to Americans. This was in part, a direct response to declining investments by commericial media in international news. PRI launched the program in partnership with its co-production partners in 1995 to fulfill this need. The World was PRI's first co-production -- the company now has a number of productions. At its launch, it was the first program dedicated to focusing on providing global news and making the global-local connection for Americans on a daily basis in broadcasting. According to the PRI website/releases, PRI currently distributes the show to 200 public radio stations across the United States. The program reaches more than 2 million listeners every week [1]. It is primarily hosted by Lisa Mullins in Brighton, Boston, Massachusetts, but often includes substitute hosts Marco Werman and Ken Bader when Mullins is in the field.
The World was also one of the first nationally syndicated public radio programs to begin podcasting some of its content, notably its coverage of technology. Entire programs are available on its website.
The World has won many journalism awards, including:
- The World's four-part series, "The Global Race for Stem Cell Therapies," won both an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for Broadcast Journalism and a Scripps Howard Award for Excellence in Electronic Media/Radio.
- The World's four-part series "The Forgotten Plague: Malaria,"Public Communications Award from the American Society for Microbiology. Also notable since the Society confers only one award each year.
- The World's series "Hiroshima's Survivors: The Last Generation," honored by the University of Washington's Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma for excellence in coverage of victims of violence, the center's first-ever award to radio.
