The State Journal-Register is the primary daily newspaper for Springfield, Illinois and its surrounding area. It was founded in 1831 as the Sangamon Journal, and claims to be "the oldest newspaper in Illinois." The State-Journal merged with its afternoon rival, the Illinois State Register, in 1974, to create the The State Journal-Register.[1] The newspaper is owned by Fairport, New York-based GateHouse Media.[2]

As of June 2005, The State Journal-Register enjoyed audited weekday circulation averaging 55,534 copies per day.[3] The newspaper's Sunday circulation of 61,300 was the 184th largest in the United States as of September 2006.[4]
