Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

This novel describes the adventures of Bink after he has settled down with his newly pregnant wife, Chameleon. Bink has a run-in with a floating sword, which attacks him while he is trying to find his way to the Queen's ball. He confides in King Trent about this and various other new happenings. He is sent on a mission to find the source of all magic by the King Trent, along with the centaur Chester, and the soldier Crombie, who is turned into a griffin for the mission by King Trent. They set out to find the Good Magician Humfrey. They come across someone who tells them they should not continue their quest, as it could result in the end of all magic in Xanth. At this time they also find Grundy the golem, who can translate for Crombie, who could only speak in squawks. After this, they venture to find the source of magic, along with way they meet many obstacles, including a Siren, a Gorgon, madness itself, a dragon, tangle trees and various other things. The entire time Bink narrowly escapes all enemies through a series of seemingly circumstantial events, which is exactly what his talent is. Eventually they find the source of magic and Bink is faced with a moral dilema, to let it be free and destroy all magic in Xanth, or to keep it against its will.
