The Emigrants (Utvandrarna) is a 1971 film directed by Jan Troell. It tells the story of a Swedish couple who emigrate to 19th century America. The film shows that life was hard in Sweden and not much better in Minnesota. The Emigrants stars Max von Sydow, Liv Ullmann, Eddie Axberg, Sven-Olof Bern, Aina Alfredsson, Allan Edwall, Monica Zetterlund and Pierre Lindstedt. "The Emigrants" was followed by a 1972 sequel "The New Land" ("Nybyggarna") with the same cast.
The movie was adapted by Bengt Forslund and Jan Troell from the novels The Emigrants and Unto a Good Land by Vilhelm Moberg.
It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Liv Ullmann), Best Director, Best Picture and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.
