The Crusade is the third full-length studio album by thrash metal band Trivium which was released on October 10, 2006 through Roadrunner Records. It is a drastic change from their previous album "Ascendancy". This album was Produced by Jason Suecof and Mixed by Colin Richardson.

According to frontman Matt Heafy, "There's 11 ridiculously technical songs. It's a solo insanity CD, but in a good way."[4] Matt Heafy uses a low singing voice similar to that of Metallica's James Hetfield, and the metalcore scream that dominated the band's first two albums is rarely heard. In fact, the only songs that contain any Ascendency-style screams (although extremely brief) are Detonation, Becoming the Dragon, and To the Rats. This decision has received harsh criticism from a minority of fans, although on a larger scale the album as a whole was given a positive reception regardless of his singing technique.

Before the album was released, three studio-quality songs off of the album were released on the band's MySpace – "Detonation", "Anthem (We are the Fire)", and "Entrance of the Conflagration".[1] Music videos for "Entrance of the Conflagration" and "Anthem (We are the Fire)" were produced and released on Roadrunner's Web site.[5]

Some of the songs off the album are about famous killings. For example, "Entrance of the Conflagration" is about Andrea Yates's murder of her five children, "Unrepentant" is about Nazir Ahmad's murder of his three daughters and stepdaughter,"Contempt Breeds Contamination" is about the death of Amadou Diallo, and "And Sadness Will Sear" is based upon the murder of Matthew Shepard.[6]

On September 14, 2006, the album leaked in full, just under one month before its release date.

In the UK, where much of Trivium's success was, the album was released on the 9th, a day earlier than in the US, and was certified silver in the UK for sales in excess of 60,000 copies that same day[citation needed].
