Sweet Little Sixteen

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sweet Little Sixteen is the name of a Rock and Roll song written and sung by Chuck Berry.

Its subject is fans of Rock and Roll, and specifically a sixteen year old girl who is obsessed with Rock and Roll performers. She presumably qualifies as a "groupie", although the lyrics are innocent enough to avoid much controversy:

They're really rockin' in Boston
Pittsburgh, P-A
Deep in the Heart of Texas
Around the 'Frisco Bay
All over St. Looie
And down in New Orleans
All the cats want to dance with
Sweet Little Sixteen

The Beach Boys' song "Surfin' U.S.A." has virtually the same melody, with new lyrics that focus on the Beach Boys' ongoing theme of Surfing:

If everybody had an ocean
Across the U.S.A.
Then everybody'd be surfin'
Like Californ-i-a
You'd see 'em wearin' their baggies
Huarache sandals, too
A bushy bushy blond hairdo
Surfin' U.S.A.

  • Various Beach Boys CD's, such as the Endless Summer collection, acknowledge "C. Berry" as the author of the tune for "Surfin' U.S.A."
