Students for Democracy and Peace (SfDaP), is a UK based think tank of school and university students. It was founded in November 2005, aiming to provide a fresh intellectual impetus to Britain's anti-war movement—which had been in steady decline since the time of the Iraq war. It set out to provide fresh ideas, based on principles rather than prior ideology. Emerging from the school students' section of the Stop the War Coalition, it set out to provide a more democratically based and politically inclusive voice to the anti-war movement.
It was founded by a section of School Students Against War who had left the organisation after disagreements over the G8 protests. Its founders came predominantly from the soft left and centre of UK politics, although it aims to be open to all who share its values of democracy and peace. Membership currently ranges from the hard left to the liberal right, providing a melting pot of radical ideas for international policy. Many members have been prominent activists in the anti-war movement for several years, giving them a unique insight into the dynamics of the contemporary politics of peace. SfDaP looks to build on this experience and to broaden the intellectual debate by adding new voices who may have been alienated from existing organisations.
Membership is free, SfDaP rely on donations from members and sponsorship.
