Stud farm
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A stud farm or stud in animal husbandry, is an establishment for selective breeding. The term takes its name from word for the entire, (that is, not castrated), male of a given animal species that is standing at stud, meaning available for reproduction. Studs may be said to be "closed" (where no outside males or females are used) or "open", where outside animals may be mated with individuals from the stud. Usually, outside animals must be approved by the owners or studmasters of the establishment, sometimes quite hefty stud fees are involved.
The word stud is often restricted to larger domesticated (especially farm) animals, such as cattle and horses. A specialized vocabularly exists for the studs of other animals, such as kennel (dog), cattery (cat) and aviary (birds).
For example, a throughbed of horses breeded for race.
