Stephen spent much of his life in the beachside community of Laguna Beach. He grew up with an interest in water sports with his dad. Surprisingly, at age 11, Stephen gained an interest in acting.

During his Senior year in high school, Stephen was approached by MTV producers for a role on an up-and-coming reality show. After telling his story to producers, he was asked if cameras could follow his every move and, he agreed, as did some of his friends, including then-girlfriend Kristin Cavallari. This show is most popularly known as Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County.

Following the success of Laguna Beach, Stephen was included in Teen People magazine's Top Ten Most Beautiful Guy Stars of 2005 and featured in Teen Vogue magazine's Young Hollywood's Up and Coming for 2005.

When filming for Laguna Beach ended, Stephen went on to study television production at San Francisco State University. He later withdrew and moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. He can be seen in several episodes of One Tree Hill, playing the role Chase Adams. Additionally, Stephen can be seen co-hosting MTV's Total Request Live, including New Year of music on New Year's Eve in TRL's Time Square studio.

Colletti was Punk'd. The show involved his then girlfriend Hayden Panettiere. In the episode Hayden was receiving a tan in the booth while some workers cut a hole in the wall and took pictures.

  • Before and during filming of Laguna Beach, Stephen was dating Kristin Cavallari. The pair are no longer together.
  • He has also been said to have had a relationship with childhood friend and Laguna Beach co-star Lauren Conrad, who is now starring in another MTV reality show The Hills.
  • Stephen dated NBC's Heroes cast member, Hayden Panettiere, since summer 2006, but broke up recently though they are "still friends".
