St. Clairsville, Ohio

St. Clairsville is a city in Belmont County, Ohio in the United States. It is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,057 at the 2000 census. This county seat of Belmont CountyGR6 has been nicknamed "Paradise on the Hill." St. Clairsville was named after Northwest Territory Governor Gen. Arthur St. Clair. [1]

St.Clairsville is located at 40°4′46″N, 80°54′5″W (40.079379, -80.901274)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,057 people, 2,262 households, and 1,431 families residing in the city. The population density was 908.1/km² (2,354.2/mi²). There were 2,430 housing units at an average density of 436.4/km² (1,131.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.48% White, 3.08% African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.36% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.47% of the population.

There were 2,262 households out of which 24.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.78.

In the city the population was spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and 23.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 82.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,630, and the median income for a family was $47,808. Males had a median income of $40,597 versus $25,229 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,416. About 4.2% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.0% of those under age 18 and 5.4% of those age 65 or over.

St. Clairsville is currently home to St. Clairsville High School[2], Middle School, and Elementary School. The St. Clairsville Mascot is the Red Devil. The school system serves grades Pre-K to 12.

Also located in town, is St. Mary's School which includes grades K-8. St. Mary's School is a feeder school into St. John Central High located in Bellaire. Both schools are of the Roman Catholic Affiliation.

These areas include the newly updated Wal-Mart Supercenter. Also set to open is a Panera Bread and two Starbucks. One, currently open inside the mall, and another, that will feature a drivethrough. The Ohio Valley Mall[5] includes stores such as: American Eagle, Fabio's Pizza, Electronics Boutique, Big K-Mart, Sears, JC Penney's, Steve and Barry's University Sportswear, and Macy's.

Located only a few minutes from St. Clairsville is one of the largest country music concerts in the Mid-West. Jamboree in the Hills[6] has been located near St. Clairsville for 30 years as of July 2006, and continues to attract country music fans from all over the United States. It is also the time when accidents due to intoxication are reported to peak.

Another popular location is St. Clairsville, is the Bike Path as most residents know it, which stretches from the Saginaw Mine entrance, to the Junior Sports Complex, totalling approximately 7.7 miles. The Bike Path is home to a beautiful gazebo, two nature trails, and countless scouts projects. The National Road Bikeway in St. Clairsville is the only bike trail in Ohio with a rail tunnel.

The City of St. Clairsville, Ohio owns and intends to redevelop the Clarendon Hotel. Built in 1890, it is one of the oldest continuously operating hotels on the National Road, a National Scenic Byway.

The 15,000 S.F. Romanesque Revival building is located within a restored National Historic District. The St. Clairsville area is the retail center of the Wheeling, West Virginia metropolitan statistical area. Hotel occupancy here exceeds the national average. Considerable public sector financial assistance is available. Private sector equity and debt will be required. The community's vision is to create a boutique hotel of 20 rooms and a 110 seat restaurant.

The property is located on the Courthouse Plaza, across from a developing tourism center. Over 12,000 vehicles per day pass the property and I-70's 50,000 VPD are one mile away. Local hotel and restaurant industry sales also surpass national averages.[7]
