St. Albans City, Vermont

St. Albans is a city in and the shire town^[1] (county seat)^GR6 of Franklin County, Vermont, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 9,650. St Albans City is completely surrounded by St. Albans town, which is incorporated separately from the city of St. Albans.

Saint Albans is the northern terminus of the Vermonter, an all-coach train operated by Amtrak, the national passenger rail system. This train operates daily from Saint Albans to and from Washington, D.C. via Montpelier, Vermont; Springfield, Massachusetts; Hartford, Connecticut; New York City; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; and points between. The train formerly continued on from Saint Albans to Montreal and was named the Montrealer, but that connection is now accomplished by bus.

St. Albans is also an important entry point for those doing genealogical research, as European immigrants headed for the United States would often land at Halifax or Montreal, then take a train through this Vermont border crossing. The National Archives (NARA) lists for St. Albans cover the period 1895-1954.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²), all land.

St. Albans sponsors an annual Maple Festival in late April. The festival includes many different food-related contests, as well as a footrace from Swanton, 8.2 miles (13.2 km) to the north.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 7,650 people, 3,235 households, and 1,937 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,455.0/km² (3,768.2/mi²). There were 3,376 housing units at an average density of 642.1/km² (1,662.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.87% White, 0.39% Black or African American, 1.20% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,235 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% were non-families. 31.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $37,221, and the median income for a family was $44,286. Males had a median income of $31,340 versus $23,262 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,853. About 8.5% of families and 9.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 11.9% of those age 65 or over.
