Soviet Northern Front

The Northern Front was a Front (military subdivision) of the Soviet Army during the Second World War. This sense of the term is not identical with the more general usage of military front which indicates a geographic area in wartime, although a Soviet Front may operate within designated boundaries.
The Northern Front was created on June 24, 1941 from the Leningrad Military District. It included the 7th, 14th, and 23rd Armies. Its main purpose was the defense of the Kola Peninsula and the northern shores of the Gulf of Finland. On August 23, 1941, the forces divided into the Karelian Front and the Leningrad Front.
In June 1941 the Northern Front included the 7th Army, with the 54th, 71st, 168th, and 237th Rifle Divisions, the 14th Army, with the 42nd Rifle Corps (the 104th and 122nd Rifle Divisions), 14th, 52nd Rifle Divisions and 1st Tank Division, and the 23rd Army.
