Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC but usually just referred to as SIU) is located in Carbondale, Illinois. The Carbondale campus is the flagship campus of the Southern Illinois University system, which includes SIU's smaller sister institution Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Founded in 1869, SIU ranks as one of the top three universities in Illinois. SIU is recognized in the U.S. News & World Report rankings as a "National University", that is, a university which grants a variety of doctoral degrees and strongly emphasizes research.[3] US News ranks SIU in the "third tier", meaning that it is currently in the third quartile of schools within the National University category.[1] Among public universities in Illinois, only the University of Illinois ranks higher. Additionally, SIU is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as “Doctoral Research Extensive”. The University offers the full range of degree programs from the bachelor’s to the doctoral level, as well as professional degrees in law and medicine.[3]

In 1869, SIU was founded as a teacher's college named Southern Illinois Normal University. It began with twelve academic departments, and an initial class of 143. The university remained a teacher's college until Delyte W. Morris took office as president of the university 1948. Morris was SIU's longest serving (1948-1970) president.[4] and during his presidency, SIU was transformed from a teacher's college, to the second-ranking public comprehensive research university in Illinois.[citation needed] Among his many accomplishments, Morris created SIU's law, medical, and dental schools.
SIU's total undergraduate enrollment is around 20,000.[3]
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching recognizes Southern Illinois University, Carbondale as an elite institution of higher education, based on breadth of research and academic programs. Carnegie categorizes Southern as: "RU/H: Research Universities (high research activity)."[5]
- SIU was the first major university in the United States to be handicap accessible in the early 1960s.[citation needed]
- SIU has the top ranked center for teaching English as a Second Language in the United States.
- SIU has the top ranked Automotive Technology program in the nation.
- SIU has one of the top 3 ranked Aviation programs in the nation.
- Other nationally ranked programs at SIUC include Aviation, Mass Communications, Fine Arts, and Rehabilitation.[citation needed]
On November 18, 2005, the SIU Board of Trustees unanimously selected former congressman and three-degree SIU alumnus Glenn Poshard to serve as the new President of Southern Illinois University. Poshard took office in January 2006.[6] He continues to hold this position despite the recent scandal that erupted when it was learned that he had "inadvertently" plagiarized his doctoral dissertation. He was allowed to rewrite it.
