The Southern Football League is an Australian rules football league which is based in Tasmania, Australia.

The SFL started out in 1996, when the league was then known as the Southern Tasmanian Football League . The teams that competed in the first season were Brighton, Lauderdale, Lindisfarne, Claremont, Kingston, Channel and Sorell. The first Southern FL Grand Final saw Channel 12.15.87 defeat Kingston 11.4.70.

Kingston 10.14.74 defeated Claremont 8.1.49 in the league's 2nd ever Grand Final in 1997.

The following year the Southern Tasmanian FL changed its name to the Southern FL, that same year Hobart, Cygnet, Huonville, and Kermandie would be added to the league. Hobart would join from the TFL, and the rest were from the now defunct Huon FA. That same year Brighton would draw with Cygnet which would be the leagues only draw. The following week Brighton 14.24.108 defeated Cygnet 5.12.42.

In 2000 the league would gain one more club as former TFL club New Norfolk would join the league, they would drop the Eagles name as Sorell already had it, and would go by Derwent Hawks. The following year the Tasmanian Football League (known as Statewide Football) would go bust leaving Clarence, Glenorchy and North Hobart without a home.

Glenorchy would be forced to drop the Magpies name and their colours because Claremont were the Magpies of the league. Clarence told to stop being the Kangaroos as Kermandie were called that. And North Hobart were forced to change it;s strip as Brighton wore the red and blue jumper of the league. In the 2001 Grand Final Clarence 17.19.121 defeated Glenorchy 11.11.77.

The following year a divisional system was commenced, where the league would be split into 2 divisions of 8 teams.

  • Sorell (final season)

Division 2 contained:

  • Channel
  • Claremont
  • Cygnet
  • Dodges Ferry (debut season)
  • Huonville
  • Kermandie
  • Lauderdale
  • Lindisfarne

Division one was to be known as the "Premier League" while Division Two became known as the "Regional League".

In 2004 the leagues would be changed again, where Sorell would drop into the Regional league, and Lauderdale would join the Premier League, as well as now being known as The Bombers. Glenorchy would also have a name change winning the rights to be the Magpies again, while at first it was for a few games in 2005 they would wear the colours for the whole year. New Norfolk would also be allowed access to their old red, white and black strip and be called the Eagles again.

New Norfolk would break their premiership drought in 2005 by beating Clarence at North Hobart Oval, Kermandie would break Cygnets streak of 3 flags in a row.

2006 would see the entry of the Triabunna Roos and Central Hawks into the Regional League after being promoted from the ODFA (Oatlands District Football Association). The Glenorchy Magpies finished minor premiers for the first time since 1988 in the Premier League and the Dodges Ferry Sharks finished top of the ladder in the Regional League. The Grand Finals saw rivals Dodges Ferry and Sorell take on each other in the Regional League and Clarence and Glenorchy in the Premier League Grand Final. In the Regional League Dodges Ferry 14.13.97 defeted Sorell 13.9.87 at North Hobart Oval in front of 3,715-people. In the Premier League, Clarence defeted the minor premiers 17.13.115 to Glenorchy's 11.12.78 infront of a crowd of 7,149 at North Hobart Oval
