South West Surrey by-election, 1984

The South West Surrey by-election, 1984 was a parliamentary by-election held on 3 May 1984 for the British House of Commons constituency of South West Surrey.

The seat had become vacant on 10 March 1984, when the constituency's Conservative Member of Parliament (MP), Maurice Macmillan, had died suddenly at the age of 63. A Cabinet minister in Edward Heath's government in the 1970s, he was the son of former Conservative Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. He had been South West Surrey's MP since the constituency was created for the 1983 general election, having previously been MP for Farnham from 1966. MacMillan had first entered Parliament at the 1955 general election, but had held lost that seat at the 1964 general election.
