South Park DVDs

South Park was first released on DVD in Europe, the first four seasons were released between 2000 and 2001 (no further seasons have been released on region 2 format as of August 2006). They were later released in the United States, starting in 2002. This article contains information on the season sets. All the European sets comprise four discs each (apart from season one, which has three). Each of the U.S. box sets comprise three discs. Except where noted, the European releases contained no special features.

The 1st South Park box set, Unrated in the United States and 14A in Canada, was released on November 12, 2002 on Warner Bros., later re-released on Paramount Home Entertainment on June 29, 2004, in English Dolby Stereo with the option of English, Spanish or French subtitles and contains all 13 episodes from South Park's first season. The European release contained no extra features other than the introductions by Trey Parker and Matt Stone:

Full Length commentaries were recorded by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, but they felt that they were of poor quality [1]. However, they were available on five CD's for a limited offer, by sending in an order form that was found on the official website, the proofs of purchases found within the DVD set and $3.50.[2] (Look under 24. November 5, 2002).

Season 2 was released on DVD in Europe on April 16, 2001 on Warner Vision International with no extra features. It was released in the United States on June 3, 2003 on Warner Bros. and was re-released with the 1st season on June 29, 2004. Language/subtitle options are the same as Season 1, as well as the ratings. Here is the list of all of Season Two's episodes as separated into 3 discs for the U.S. release:

For a limited time, a bonus disc containing the original version of "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe" was available by pre-ordering the Season 2 DVD set through Best Buy's website. [4] (Look under 11. May 28, 2003).

The 3rd South Park box set was released on June 18 2001 in Europe on Warner Vision International with no special features and December 16, 2003 in the US on Paramount Home Entertainment only (no Warner Bros. release, to date all US South Park DVD box sets from Season 3 onwards have been released on Paramount Home Entertainment only). There are no subtitles but English Dolby Stereo, Spanish Mono and French Dolby Stereo audio tracks are available along with an optional commentary from the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone on every episode. The commentaries are unique in that they are "mini commentaries", which last about four or five minutes. This box set is Unrated in the United States but is an 18A in Canada because of the finale, World Wide Recorder Concert. This is The Season Three Episode List:

With the exception of the audio commentaries previously mentioned, there are no bonus features on Season 3+ South Park DVDs although there are Comedy Central "Quickies" on the third disc which are previews of South Park and other Comedy Central Shows including Reno 911! and Chapelle's Show.

You could listen to the movie in either French or English, both versions with subtitles.

The disc has Kyle, Stan, Kenny, and Cartman, on every side. The disc is silver with the exceptions of the outlines of the four boys.

The 4th season of South Park DVD box set was released on June 29, 2004, the same day the first and second seasons were re-released on Paramount Home Entertainment Unrated in the United States, it has gone back to a 14A in Canada (all seasons 1,2 and 4+ are 14A in Canada as of the Season 7 DVD). The commentaries continue, though the Spanish and French audio tracks are lost, with only an English Dolby Stereo track (same applies to Season 5+). Here are the episodes on Season Four:

The 5th box set of South Park was released on February 22, 2005, same ratings/audio options as Season 4. The DVD Previews and Comedy Central "Quickies" are now both on the first disc. Here is the episode listing for Season Five:

On The Season 5 DVD, the first disc is where the third normally is and vice versa, the first disc's artwork relates to an episode from the third disc and vice-versa again.

The sixth season of South Park was released on October 11, 2005, the ratings, audio options and position of the Comedy Central "Quickies" and DVD previews are carried over from the previous season. Also, when you slip out the box containing the DVDs, the Butters on the actual front cover is Professor Chaos. Here is the Season 6 episode list:

Released on March 21, 2006, two basic designs have been changed in this boxset, the front cover and the disc character (see below). The Season 7 episodes are listed here:

Unlike Seasons 1 through 6, the Season 7 box has a hole in it so when the digipack is out of the slipcase, you only see a hole in the front of the box. When inserted, you see Stan, Kyle and Kenny through the hole. (Pictures, right, from top to bottom: Front, back, front without the digipack, digipack outside the slipcase) The box is also the first cover not to feature Cartman.

Also different in the Season 7 of South Park boxset is the disc character. Previous boxes had a specific character on all of the discs:

  • Season 2- Cartman
  • Season 3- Stan
  • Season 4- Timmy
  • Season 5- Kyle
  • Season 6- Butters

On Season 7 however, Cartman is on Disc 1, Kenny on Disc 2 and Stan is on Disc 3.

Season 8's box is again different from any other seasons box. The slipcase has the 4 main boys dressed up like ninjas from Good Times With Weapons. The digipack has a picture of the boys in their Japanese anime format. There is no hole in the slipcase so the digipack shows through, as there was in the Season 7 disc set.

The design for the discs are different like Season 7. This season, each disc design highlights different episodes on those discs. AWESOM-O and Butters are on Disc 1, the Douche and the Turd mascots are on Disc 2 and Stan and the Woodland Critters from Woodland Critter Christmas are on Disc 3.

The episodes Trapped in the Closet and Bloody Mary were originally thought to have been pulled from any future airings and the South Park DVD, however Comedy Central stated in a press release that they will not exclude any South Park episodes from future DVD Releases[citation needed], including Trapped in the Closet, which made fun of Scientology, and Bloody Mary which angered the Catholic community. Trapped in the Closet will also appear on South Park The Hits: Volume 1, with 9 other favorite episodes, plus "The Spirit of Christmas" (see below). The episode "Trapped in the Closet" will also appeared on a DVD Recorder with "A Collection of Funny Episodes."

  • "AWESOM-O" - Stone: "This episode has one of my favorite scenes of any 'South Park' ever...which is when Cartman gets off the plane. He gets to Los Angeles and he has to eat the toothpaste 'cause he's so fucking hungry. That just totally makes sense that you'd be that hungry where you'd just eat toothpaste."
  • "Best Friends Forever" - Parker: "We went out to the animation staff and we're like, 'Okay, good news. We've come up with a show idea for this week. It's going to be a final battle between heaven and hell.' And they were just like, 'Oh, shit.'"
  • "Casa Bonita" - Stone: "This episode perfectly explains Cartman's character. It's not really about the experience, he doesn't want friends there." Parker: "Yeah. He would rather be the only person on the planet." Stone: "To me, that perfectly encapsulates what's wrong with Cartman....he sucks so bad."
  • "Good Times with Weapons" - Parker: "The thing I'm most proud of in this episode is the song. I think we hit the song perfectly. I think we got the anime pretty good, but that song..."
  • "Red Hot Catholic Love" - Parker: "For some reason we thought the imagery of someone crapping out their mouth would work ultimately in a show. And then luckily a bunch of priests got caught molesting kids. And we're like, 'Bingo.'"
  • "The Return of the Lord of the Rings to the Two Towers" - Parker: "This episode is just a perfect example, to us, about how much fun the show can be when it's just kids being kids."
  • "Scott Tenorman Must Die" - Parker: "This is a very important episode in the 'South Park' library because it did definitely change Cartman. I mean, it took him from kind of a little shit head to probably the most evil kid in the world."
  • "Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Playset" - Stone: "Most of the time when people ask us about, you know, ripping on celebrities and featuring celebrities in the show, I always say, 'Well, you know, it's not personal. It's just ripping on the idea of celebrity itself. You know, it's just kind of this absurdist thing that we do.' But then you look at this episode and it really isn't that. We have to stop little girls from looking up to Paris Hilton."
  • "Towelie" - Parker: "We rented a houseboat on Lake Mead with a bunch of our friends who are also writers on 'South Park' and we were getting into a boat, and everyone was like, 'Yeah, did you bring a towel? Everyone bring a towel? You - you got a towel?' And then people just started going, 'Don't forget to bring a towel.' And that, for some reason that caught on and then it became, 'Towelie says, don't forget to bring a towel.' And then that became 'Towelie.'"
  • "Trapped In The Closet" - Parker: "We're pretty sure it's going be one of our most infamous ever, I think, just because of all the hubbub it caused. I don't think we've ever had a single episode that has stirred up this much unwanted and wanted attention."

This is the first time that Comedy Central decided to go with a plain disc design. The discs simply read "South Park: The Hits Volume 1" and are similar for both discs. However behind the discs is a picture of one of the South Park Characters. This is also the first time that Comedy Central decided to have a chrome-finish on the DVD, instead of their matte with glossy characters. This finish does show fingerprints on it unlike previous South Park DVDs.
