Soleanna
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soleanna is a fictional city in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It made its debut appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog, which was released for the Xbox 360 in 2006 and the PlayStation 3 in 2007. Soleanna is said to be the city of water, as the whole city is interspersed with rivers. Much of the city's architecture revolves around water too, with numerous bridges and fountains plazas scattered about Soleanna. There is an assumed inspiration from the city of Venice in the city's design within the game.

Soleanna is an important cultural center, filled with temples, theaters and fine cuisines that the locals take much pride in. The city has kept its traditions alive throughout the centuries, though little is known of its origins. Soleanna benefits from a monarchy, with the current ruler of the city being Princess Elise III.
Soleanna appears to be somewhat happy and peaceful. Many citizens state that Soleanna has always been this way and that this is their chief reason for staying here. There's a strong appreciation for the city's many state ceremonies. The most famous of these is the Festival of the Sun, which sees the ceremonial torches in Soleanna's lake set alight. It is during this festival that the city came under attack by Dr. Eggman's forces.
The Soleanna Sun Festival
Soleanna, being a cultural center, is the holder of numerous celebrities. The most famous event is known as the "Soleanna Sun Festival". The sun has been always sacred in the city, it is an important part of the culture of Soleanna, and the citizens give thanks for the star. Despite this, the festival is being held at night, but all buildings and towers are well lighted, adding a special mood to the event. However, all of the people pray to the sun, the most important actions come from the current ruler of Soleanna. He or she has the opportunity to travel through the rivers of Soleanna on a wonderful boat, while dancers dance behind the ruler in yellow dresses, making a reference to the sunlight. After the ruler travelled through the city, the boat heads for the "Altar of Light" also known as the "Altar of Flame". This altar takes place in the downtown of Soleanna, in a central place. When the current ruler arrived, he or she is greeted by the bishop, then he or she is given a torch. The ruler is supposed to light up the altar with the torch, saying the following line:
"We give thanks for the blessed flames. May we always continue to have peace. Sun of Soleanna, guide and watch over us with your eternal light".
The altar lights up, and the fireworks launch. This is the moment, where the city gets under attack by Dr. Eggman, and Princess Elise gets kidnapped.
The Soleanna Apple Festival
Soleanna is the holder of the Apple festival too, although it isn't as famous as the Sun Festival. The city isn't as well-decorated, but the people enjoy this happy event, as the quality of the Soleannan apples are world-famous.
The Duke of Soleanna
The Duke of Soleanna was the wise, calm leader of Soleanna, before his daughter, Princess Elise took his place. Despite being a king, he was a brilliant sciensist. He had a really strong relation to his daughter. Before he died, he begged Elise to never cry.
Princess Elise
Princess Elise is the current leader of the city. She is one of the most popular leaders of Soleanna, and the citizens really adore her. When Elise was seven years old, she was with her father, the Duke of Soleanna, when he tried to extract energy from the sun god of Soleanna, Solaris. The experiment accidentally splits the deity in two entities, but the Duke manages to transfer one half, Iblis, into Elise. He then tells her that she must never cry, as that would release the destructive Iblis, also known as the "Flames of Disaster". The Duke then dies from wounds inflicted to him during the experiment.
In the present time of the game, Elise celebrates the Festival of the Sun in Soleanna. The games' antagonist, Doctor Eggman, then attacks the city and kidnaps Elise, out to get the power of the Flames of Disaster she keeps inside her. Sonic quickly chases after them. Elise is later killed along with Eggman when the Egg Carrier explodes due to unstable engines, but Sonic and Silver use Chaos Control to go back in time and save them.
In the "Last Story", Sonic is killed by Mephiles, the other half of Solaris. Elise breaks down and cries, releasing Iblis, as Mephiles had planned. Mephiles then fuses with Iblis, turns into Solaris again, and takes off to destroy the universe. After Sonic's friends find the seven Chaos Emeralds, Elise uses their powers to kiss Sonic, bringing him back from the dead. After Solaris is destroyed by Super Sonic, Super Shadow, and Super Silver, Sonic and Elise go back in time to when Solaris was just a flame. Elise takes the flame and tells Sonic that if it does not blow out, the flame that will become Solaris in the future, it will result in her and Sonic never meeting. Sonic confirms this with a nod of his head. Overcome in despair, the princess shouts that she doesn't care what happens to the rest of the world, meaning their friendship means more to her than anything. Sonic tells Elise to just smile, meaning to accept life's ways for the what they are and to go with the flow, even when things aren't going satisfactorily. Elise considers this. With tears in her eyes, Elise gently blows Solaris from existence, thus erasing the whole game's events and happenings.
With this being done, the game returns back to its beginning scene when the Festival of the Sun is taking place in Soleanna, except that Eggman doesn't come to abduct Elise since there is no so called "Flames of Disaster" secret. As the ceremony is taking place, Sonic rushes past the boat that Elise is on. At this point in time, Sonic obviously has a small recollection of Elise. The "wind" of his rapid pace causes one of the feathers in Elise's hair to detach. After staring in wonder at the floating detached feather for a while, one of her maids comments that it was probably just the wind that gushed by. Elise acknowledges this, but states that this "wind" feels familiar some how. After this we see Sonic, who is perched upon a stone structure high above where the Soleanna festival is taking place. The game concludes where Sonic is watching Elise's detached feather float up into the moonlit sky.
Wave Ocean: The popular beach of Soleanna. It is a reference to the Emerald Coast stage from Sonic Adventure, and it shows lots of similarities with it.
Dusty Desert: As the name suggests, it is a desert area of Soleanna. The two sections of this stage resemble acts 1 and 2 of Sandopolis from Sonic and Knuckles. Ancient ruins of pyramids are found here.
White Acropolis: The snowy mountains of Soleanna. It resembles Ice Cap from Sonic Adventure. Dr. Eggman's base is located here.
Radical Train: This is the train station of the city of water. It doesn't seem to be very modern, and the rails seem to be somewhat old.
Tropical Jungle: It is a large forest in the middle of Soleanna. It shows some simalarities with the Green Forest stage from Sonic Adventure 2. Large plants and exotic flowers are growing here.
Kingdom Valley: A grassy valley in the mountains. The ruins of the ancient castle of Soleanna are found here. This place seems a bit hard to access.
Aquatic Base: A laboratory located underneath Soleanna at the bottom of the sea. It is very advanced and futuristic.
