The Old Sith Empire (commonly referred to as simply "Sith Empire") was an ancient empire established by Ajunta Pall and his Dark Jedi who were banished from the Galactic Republic. They were seen as gods by the native Sith and made themselves their rulers.

The Old Sith Empire was far smaller than the Republic, but much wealthier, and in possession of bizarre, potent technology. The Dark Lords who ruled it also practiced dark Sith alchemy to augment their already formidable powers.

Much later, hyperspace navigators Gav and Jori Daragon stumbled upon the Old Sith Empire and the descendants of the former Jedi rediscovered the existence of the Republic and decided to conquer it. Thus, the Great Hyperspace War began. However, after an assault on Coruscant, the Sith were defeated. For over a millennium it was believed that the Old Sith Empire had been destroyed shortly afterward, due to both infighting among the Sith Lords and attacks on the empire by the Republic, but during the Mandalorian Wars it was rediscovered by the fallen Jedi Revan and Malak in the Unknown Regions, patiently waiting for its chance to return to power.

The rechristened Darth Revan and Darth Malak founded a new Sith Empire in 3,690 BBY. The empire was initially led by Revan; however, Malak later betrayed Revan and became leader of the empire during the Jedi Civil War. However, its splendor paled in comparison to that of the original, and, following Malak's death and Revan's redemption, it effectively dissolved 4 years later.

In 2,000 BBY, a rogue Jedi stole a Sith Holocron and founded yet another Sith Order, one which eventually grew into an empire and did what Revan and Malak had not quite been able to: conquer the galaxy. It is unknown how long the New Sith Empire ruled the galaxy, but at some point in the millennium-long New Sith Wars, the Brotherhood of Darkness was driven from power, and eventually destroyed in the Battle of Ruusan.

The rise of Emperor Palpatine almost one thousand years following the collapse of the New Sith Empire brought about the return of a Sith-led Empire. Following the death of Palpatine and Darth Vader at the Battle of Endor, this Empire was no longer led by a Sith and eventually collapsed into the Imperial Remnant.
