The school received its first student intake in January 2004, and was officially opened by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 2 April 2004. The school's S$75 million premises are located on a 70,000 square metre site at 1 Champions Way in Woodlands off Woodlands Drive 17.

The Singapore Sports School is a specialized school providing a good academic and training environment for talented young athletes. The idea for establishing a specialised school for young athletes was mooted by the Committee on Sporting Singapore (CoSS) in 2000.

The CoSS had noted that Singapore's demanding academic environment places a lot pressure on young athletes, leading most of them to abandon their sporting aspirations in favour of their studies.

In mainstream schools, it was also observed, resources given over to elite sports development are often limited as their focus is usually directed towards a quality academic education.

Following the Government's decision, the hardware had to be put in place -- a S$75 million complex in Woodlands that eventually took only 13 months to complete.

Mr Moo, the school principal, is assisted by Mr Chua Choon Seng who heads the Corporate Services Division, Dr Irwin Seet, who is the Director of Sports, and Mr Raymond Mak and Mr Seah Poh Chua, who are the Deans of the Academic Division.

No other school in Singapore connects sports and studies so closely as the Sports School, which comes under the auspices of the Ministry for Community Development, Youth and Sports.

Apart from providing a modular curriculum to enable students to meet the rigorous demands of training and competition, the Sports School puts each student on a personal journey towards excellence. It helps its students to be the best they can be both in the competition arena and in class. The Sports School's focus is not on winning, but on reaching the student's potential. In this culture, a student not only learns about discipline and mental focus, but also cultivates a desire to excel.

The chosen students live five days a week on the campus. Their day starts at 6 am when they prepare for their first training session. Breakfast follows. Then, modular lessons based on the curriculum taught at mainstream schools in specialised classrooms, lunch, enrichment programmes, a nap, a second training session, dinner and supervised study time. Lights out is at 10.30 pm.

The Sports School has a Sports Science Academy, the only one in Singapore. A biomechanist, an exercise physiologist, a sports psychologists, three physiotherapist, two strength and conditioning coach, and a nutritionist monitor the growth and development of the student sportsmen, ensuring that they perform at their optimum best while the bar on performance is constantly raised.

The logo is made up of a pair of orange and red wings.

The pair of wings is a universal symbol of flight and is used to symbolise the soaring aspirations of our students. The symmetry of the wings denotes the balance between academic finesse and sporting excellence.

The colour red signifies the passion and pride of the school's students and staff while orange represents their youthfulness and vigour.

Outlined amidst the pair of wings is a trophy. This symbolises the School's commitment in providing our students the environment and ample opportunities to help them fulfill their sporting potential and let their dreams take flight.

The Singapore Sports School has classrooms catering to classes of 20-25 students, science labs, libraries, specialised home rooms and music labs and 3 residential blocks for students and staff.
