Shakespearean romances

The Shakespearean romances are any of Shakespeare's four final plays.

While technically comedies, in recent years Shakespearean scholars have begun to classify them as a separate category.

"Romance" does not refer to romantic courtship, although three of the plays do end with engagements and/or reconciliation of old couples. Rather romance refers to the surreal settings and plotlines involving magic and divine intervention.

While these plays are not as tragic as the Problem comedies, several involve deaths and all involve some element of tragedy.
