Sergeant Yates is a fictional character in the animated series South Park and is voiced by Trey Parker. An inept Irish-American police officer, Yates was first seen as a background character (albeit facial hair) at the police station in episode 706, "Lil' Crime Stoppers." He became far more prominent in episode 709, "Christian Rock Hard," when he took the boys into custody for downloading music illegally on the Internet. He also had a brief role in episode 711, "Casa Bonita," leading a search for Butters.

In Season 8, Yates makes two appearances, both as a major character. In episode 807, "The Jeffersons," Michael Jackson (known as Mr. Jefferson) moves into South Park and it is revealed that Yates hates all black men wealthier than himself and frames them—as Mark Fuhrman was accused of doing to O.J. Simpson—but panics and becomes disillusioned when he realizes "Mr. Jefferson" is black despite his "white appearance." In episode 813, "Cartman's Incredible Gift," he is the investigator of a serial killer and believes that Cartman is psychic who can assist his search for him.

Yates would appear again in Season 9. In episode 906, "The Death of Eric Cartman," he and a police crew make an attempt to save 12 hostages from 3 murderers, who escape from jail, at a Red Cross hospital. With the unexpected help of Eric Cartman confusing the murderers and Butters saving the hostages, they manage to arrest the criminals with no one dead or injured. In episode 913, "Free Willzyx," he leads an investigation on a missing whale.

In Season 10, Yates only has one appearance, in the episode 1010, "Miss Teacher Bangs a Boy."

Yates appears in Season 11 in "Cartman Sucks" when Cartman attempts to regain the picture of himself sucking Butter's penis from Kyle by filing a police report with Sergeant Yates.

Since his first appearance in the 7th season, it seems as if Yates has replaced Officer Barbrady as the show's primary law enforcement representative, although Barbrady is still seen whenever an incompetent cop is needed. Technically, Yates is Park County police, as opposed to Barbrady, who is local. Yates often appears alongside his detective companion Murphy "Mitch" Harrison, who isn't quite as gullible as Yates, but proves to be just as oblivious. Yates' wife, Maggie, speaks with an Irish accent.

Some fans have gone so far as to say he has effectively replaced Barbrady's role on South Park.

Born on July 31.
