Self Awareness

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Self awareness is the concept of inherent ability to define oneself as an individual who is able to interact with it's surroundings. Self awareness largely goes hand in hand with the concept of sapience, since sapience is by default what makes an organism able to think for itself. It can also be connected to sentience although, as previously discussed, sentience and sapience are often confused. Sapience would indeed form part of self awareness, as judgement ultimately is one of the criteria which makes a being self aware.

Self awareness is inextricably connected to morality - although being self aware does not necessarily guarantee a moral or amoral state of mind. One can accept that a being can be self aware without being moral. This could be because an individual has not been exposed to moral conduct (such as individuals who are brought up external to civilisation), or because the person has consciously chosen to adopt an amoral stance - possibly due to experience or upbringing.
