Admiral Saul Karath was an Admiral of the Old Republic fleet, who served under Revan and Malak during the Mandalorian Wars. He makes his appearance in the LucasArts published video game: Knights of the Old Republic, where he has a supporting role as one of Darth Malak's assistant. However, from a chronological point of view, the character has been "re-introduced" into the Star Wars timeline 7 years earlier, as shown on the ongoing Knights of the Old Republic comic series from Dark Horse.

There Karath is first shown as a captain of the Republic fleet stationed on Vanquo during the first stages of the Mandalorian invasion, where he starts to develop an obsession with bringing fugitive Padawan Zayne Carrick to justice for this alleged crimes on Taris. Shortly thereafter however, Karath has been promoted to Admiral in command of the Republic fleet and flagship, the Courageous. While on Serroco to protect the system from the Mandalorian raiders, Karath finds himself unexpectedly in the presence of Carrick, first on the planet's surface and later aboard the Courageous. There, Carrick tries to no avail to warn Karath of a Jedi vision showing the impending destruction of Serroco by Mand'alor's command as a lesson for the Republic.

Unfortunately, Karath's obsession with Carrick's apparent defection to the Mandalorians means that the Admiral pays no heed to his warnings. As predicted by Carrick, the Mandalorian fleet avoids a full-on engagement with the Republic fleet, rather bombarding the Republic's camps on the surface, wiping them out along with the cities of the indigenous stereb. Few among the Republic forces on the planet manage to escape.

Shortly afterward, with its forces severely diminished after the massacre of Serroco, the Republic's battle group (including the Courageous) is overpowered by the Mandalorians over the banking world of Telerath. Karath narrowly escapes with the help of the captive Carrick aboard Carth Onasi's ship. From there, Karath goes on to attend a meeting staged by Arkanian mogul Lord Adasca where the fate of the ongoing war with the Mandalorians could seemingly be decided.

Saul Karath taught Carth Onasi everything that he knew about being a soldier. Karath had a brilliant mind, leading the Republic to many victories against the Mandalorians. When Revan and Malak ventured into the unknown regions, to destroy the last remnants of the Mandalorians, Saul went with them.

When Revan and Malak returned they were Lords of the Sith, and started the Jedi Civil War. Karath returned to talk to Carth about how the Republic was on the losing side of the conflict, and how Carth should start thinking about his own survival. Unknown to Carth, Karath was trying to recruit him into the Sith. Carth refused to betray the Republic, and Karath left to join the Sith.

To prove himself a follower of the Sith, Karath gave Darth Revan and Darth Malak the codes to by-pass the Telos--Carth's Homeworld--planetary defences. Revan and Malak took an invasion fleet to Telos, and demanded it's immediate surrender. The planet refused, and Karath went on to devastate its entire surface. Millions died and the planet eventually became a wasteland where no living thing could grow. Carth's wife was on Telos and was killed, and, unknown to Carth, the Sith captured his only son, Dustil Onasi.

When Karath staged a clever trap to capture Revan, Carth, Bastila, and their companions, he interrogated them using more than just words. Karath was not interrogating them: He was torturing them, and for his own delight.

Admiral Saul Karath ultimately met his end at the hands Carth on the Leviathan's bridge, during Revan's escape. Karath even used his last words to hurt Carth; telling Carth that his companion was actually Darth Revan.
