Sanskar Kendra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sanskar Kendra is a museum located in the city of Ahmedabad in India. Designed by the renowned architect Le Corbusier, it is a city museum depicting history, art, culture and architecture of Ahmedabad. The campus is located at the junction of Sardar Bridge and the River Sabarmati.

The museum rests on pilotis 3.4 m high. The structural grid is 7x7 m. One enters from underneath the building where there is an open court with a large pool and a ramp that leads to the exhibition spaces. The building is designed to protect against the hot climate. On the roof there are more than large 45 basins of water in which plants grow. The exterior is of plain brick and with exposed elements of raw concrete structure. The interior spaces are plastered.

The museum is similar to other museum projects by Le Corbusier, such as the "Museum of unlimited extension" project and the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo in that the plan is based on a spiral and is designed to be expanded.
