Salal Hydroelectric Project

Salal Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab River is located near Reasi in the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir state in India. Construction work commenced in 1970. The project was commissioned in two stages, at a total cost of Rs. 935,500,000. In the first stage, a 345 MW power station was commissioned in 1987. In the second stage, the station's total capacity was doubled to 690 MW by 1995. At the peak of construction, about 12,000 persons worked around the clock to complete the project.

Construction of the project was entrusted to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and handed over to them on ownership basis for operation and maintenance. Power from the project flows to the Northern Grid from where it is distributed to the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, and the union territory of Chandigarh.
