From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The school is now located in the town of Kopisan, opposite to the nearby Kampung Tersusun Kampung Pulai and Kampung Tersusun Gopeng. SMK Idris Shah Gopeng started when a group of students in the Government English School (now the SRK Gopeng Jalan Ilmu) pursue their studies just after the completion of their primary studies in the Government English School.

Since there were no proper school buildings for the secondary students at that time, they actually had to share their classrooms along with the students of SRJK(C) Man Ming, in central Gopeng. A few years later, the secondary students moved to the SRJK(C) New Kopisan which is located next to the Government English School, in the small town of Kopisan. And finally in January 1965, the new secondary school building was completed and students which was sharing their classrooms in the nearby SRJK(C) New Kopisan was transfered to this brand new secondary school named, Lower Secondary School of Gopeng. They were completely transfered on April 1965.

There were only 3 completed school blocks in 1965 which is Block A, Block B and Block C including 2 laboratories, a science room and a canteen. There were only 553 lower secondary students with only 30 available teachers. Previously in 1964, there was only one Form 3 class where students who were excellence in their LCE (Lower Certificate of Education) futher their hinger studies of Form 4 to the schools in the southern town of Kampar and the state capital of Ipoh.

In 1975, 3 more school blocks were built and finally was rename to SMK Idris Shah Gopeng. Sultan Idris was the current Sultan of Perak at that particular time and the school was named after the Sultan himself.

SMK Idris Shah Gopeng was officially opened on August 10th 1976 by the Paduka Seri Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Al-Mutawakkil Allahlahi Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Shah Kadasallah. It was the Sultan's 52nd birthday.
