Rutland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Vermont. As of 2005, the population was 63,743 [1]. Its shire town is Rutland6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,447 km² (945 sq mi). 2,415 km² (933 sq mi) of it is land and 32 km² (12 sq mi) of it (1.30%) is water. The primary stream of the county is Otter Creek, which runs through the county from the south to the north.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 63,400 people, 25,678 households, and 16,742 families residing in the county. The population density was 26/km² (68/sq mi). There were 32,311 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (35/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 90.07% White, 0.98% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 95.6% spoke English, 1.4% French and 1.2% Spanish as their first language.
There were 25,678 households out of which 29.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.30% were married couples living together, 10.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.80% were non-families. 27.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 25.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $36,743, and the median income for a family was $44,742. Males had a median income of $31,094 versus $23,964 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,874. About 7.10% of families and 10.90% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.30% of those under age 18 and 8.80% of those age 65 or over.
