Rusty was one of the Elite ZAFT pilots known as "Red Coats". He was part of the Rau Le Creuset team and their Attack on Heliopolis, but unlike the other four Red Coats, he does not have a parent on the PLANT Supreme Council. Rusty was going to steal the GAT-X105 Strike, but was killed by an Earth Alliance soldier named Hamana before he could enter the cockpit. Athrun Zala avenges his death by killing Hamana. Not much is revealed about his character other than the fact that he thinks more like Athrun and Nicol Amalfi; meaning he questions whether they are doing the right thing. In the original series, Rusty had no lines and his face was not shown (except in a photo on Athrun's billboard), hence viewers did not get a glimpse of his character until Gundam SEED: Special Edition was released.

Although no longer alive, Rusty continues to linger in the thoughts and prayers of his surviving teammates. In episode 11 of Gundam SEED Destiny, Athrun Zala, Dearka Elsman, and Yzak Joule are seen walking through a cemetery and laying flowers at the graves of Nicol Amalfi and Miguel Aiman as well as Rusty.

In the chapter cover art of Phase 4 of the manga Gundam SEED Destiny: The Edge (only shown in magazines where the series is serialised), the three deceased pilots can be seen saluting to the front.

  • At a few points in the series (SEED and SEED Destiny) a picture is shown with Rusty, Athrun, Dearka, Nicol, Yzak, Miguel, and Olor Koudenburg.
