Roman Catholic Diocese of Meath
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The (Roman Catholic) Diocese of Meath was established in A.D. 552. From 1778 until the late 19th century it had its seat in Navan, County Meath, Ireland.
Charles Stewart Parnell's affair with Kitty O'Shea led to the Bishop of Meath having a letter read at Mass in the diocese in condemnation of the relationship. As Parnell was popular, this caused a backlash which eventually lead to the seat and bishop going to Mullingar, County Westmeath permanently. The diocesan School, St. Finian's College was also moved to Mullingar. The current Bishop is Dr. Michael Smith.
