East Rochester, New Hampshire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

East Rochester, NH is an eastern section of Rochester, New Hampshire located on the banks of the Salmon Falls River which separates Maine and New Hampshire.

East Rochester was a farming community which developed into a textile and shoe manufacturing community during the industrial revolution. The "town" consists of a main street with several small shops and a shopping plaza known as "Shoreyville Plaza", which was named after the original settlement that started the area. Also on Main Street are two churches and a small library. This section of Rochester is home to approximately 5,000 residents.

In recent years, the old fire station has been converted into a museum, as fire services are now obtained from the main station in Rochester. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the area was served by the Nashua-Rochester railroad, which was later changed to the Boston and Maine Railroad. A train station called "Rindgemere", located on Autumn Street, served the people until the railroad was closed. A three-story block located on Main Street housed the post office and a clothing store until the early 1980s, when the post office was moved inside of a general store in a 2 story brick block further north on Main Street.

East Rochester also benefited from the Industrial Revolution with its strategic positioning along the Salmon Falls River, Two prosporous mills were constructed, the first which was called the Cocheco Woolen Mfg. Co. and a smaller one upstream called the "White Mill". Around the 1880s to the 1920s "Eastside" as which it is referred to by the locals, achieved the majority of its growth, however when the mills finally folded in the 1970s the area witnessed a brief decline in quality of life. However in recent years with its proximity to major routes and Industrial centers people have come back to enjoy the small village feel that East Rochester offers and the village is being restored to its former beauty. East Rochester is one of two villages that are within the Rochester city limits the other being Gonic. East Rochester is three miles from Rochester Proper.
