Peale was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the second son of Charles Willson Peale, also a well known professional artist. He spent most of his career in Philadelphia.

Peale is best known for his portraits of such prominent Americans as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Rembrandt Peale was born on George Washington's birthday in the middle of the American Revolution. He studied under his father, Charles Willson Peale. In July of 1787, Rembrandt stood behind his father as he painted a portrait of George Washington. Rembrandt Peale spent several occasions in Europe to increase his understanding and knowledge of art. Peale traveled to Paris aided by his father, from June to September of 1808, and October 1809 to November 1810 where he painted the famous explorer Baron Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt.
