Religion in Ethiopia

The most numerous religion in Ethiopia is Christianity with 61.6% (Ethiopian Orthodox 50.6%, Protestant 10.1% (P'ent'ay and Ethiopian Orthodox Tehadeso Church) and Catholic 0.9%) of the population. There is some limitation of Christians in Ethiopia, which has detoriated within the last few years. At least in some areas with an islamic majority local authorities and radical Muslims persecute Christians. The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus has about 5 milllion members. That more persons in Ethiopia are Christians than Muslims is debated.

Islam in Ethiopia is at about 32.8% of the population. It was brought to Ethiopia by refugees from Mecca in 615. Muhammad instructed his followers who came to Ethiopia, to respect and protect Ethiopia as well as live in peace with Ethiopian Christians. In the time of Haile Selassie many Muslims brought matters of Personal and Family Law and inheritance before Islamic courts. Customary Law is used by many muslims.

Traditional religion is at 5.6% of the population.
